I think that Percy Jackson, in Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is a hero. In this case, I am referring to the movie.
First, Percy Jackson is hunted down because mythical people think he has Zeus' lightning bolt. But he doesn't. And so his friend, Grover, takes him to this camp just for special people like him: Demi-Gods. There he finds that his mother, who he thought died only a few days ago from a huge Minotaur crushing her, is actually being kept prisoner by Hades.
THIS IS WHERE THE FIRST PART OF THE HERO'S JOURNEY BEGINS:
Percy is told not to go and find Hades, but he willingly decides to go and rescue his mother. Along with him come Annabeth and Grover.
THE NEXT PART OF THE JOURNEY:
Percy faces a series of trials, trying to get Persephone's pearls.
1) He faces Medusa and beheads her. Takes a pearl from her bracelet.
2) Use Medusa's head to stone a Hydra (serpent-like mythical creature). Gets pearl from top of Athena statue replica.
3) Overcomes Lotus Eaters (cookies that make you want to play) and finds pearl in roulette wheel at a hotel casino.
Then...
4) Percy finds the door to hell and finds Hades. They find Percy's mother. They find the lightning bolt in Percy's shield (which he borrowed from Luke). Hades takes the lightning bolt but Persephone helps take it from him and helps them all escape hell.
ACHIEVING HIS GOAL:
Luke takes lightning bolt from Percy but they fight and Percy gets it back and returns it to Zeus.
RETURN TO THE ORDINARY:
Percy just returns back to the camp for demi-gods and resumes his training. His skills have somewhat improved from being used in his quest.
Percy Jackson follows the classic hero's journey cycle, and so we can consider Percy Jackson a modern, fictional, hero.
